Hōm Meets / Hōm Eats Michael Rohrer February 13, 2025
Working in a group like the Hōm Team we see a lot of each other, but we decided that we don’t get to socialize with each other very often, so we’ve instituted a monthly dinner out. It will serve another purpose as well. We hope to use it to introduce our clients to new restaurants in NYC.
Our most recent outing was to Hilltop Tavern in the South Slope of Brooklyn. We met there for our January get-together and we had a great time, the space is warm, unpretentious and inviting. It is owned by the couple Georgia and Kevin Read and Osie Willmont, the owners of other local favorites Alchemy and Hamilton’s.
The menu is eclectic featuring lots of standard American tavern fare but often elevated with elements from international cuisines such as the pan-seared salmon with miso butter, a tuna steak sandwich with wasabi mayo or the crispy chicken sandwich with chipotle sauce. The prices are reasonable with pastas and sandwiches starting at $18 and topping out with a grass-fed steak frites at $34. Soups and appetizers range from $9 to $17.
Andy had the vegetarian matzo ball soup which was delicious, Cal tried a special butternut squash soup with a drizzle of cream (or was that yogurt?) and nearly licked the bowl. For entrees, Michael had the Reuben made with delicious corned beef which was accompanied by a huge stack of French fries and a small side salad. Cynthia, Andy and Cal all had pasta dishes and all were pleased with their dishes.
There is a limited, but more than adequate wine list, draft and canned beers, and a list of twelve creative house cocktails. As of our visit they hadn’t built out the full bar and were unable to offer any other cocktails beyond the ones on their varied list. We tried the Jalapeño Guava Margarita – sweet, strong and did the trick. For dessert we sampled a rich bread pudding, an affogato and a mason-jar lemon tart. All tasty!
The service was friendly, attentive and professional without being intrusive. All-in-all a lovely, casual night out. We recommend it!
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and serves weekend brunch. Happy hour is Monday – Thursday 3pm to 6pm and has $6 drafts, $11 cocktails and several wines offered at $8. There’s also a snack menu. 256 Prospect Park West, South Slope Brooklyn.
